ETH FAQs

What is the difference between Ethereum and Bitcoin?
Bitcoin was built as a store of value and digital currency — essentially digital gold. Ethereum was built as a programmable blockchain, meaning developers can build applications, smart contracts, and entire financial systems on top of it. ETH is the fuel that powers those transactions. In Australia, both are among the most widely held cryptocurrencies and are available on every major AUSTRAC-registered platform.
Can Australians buy an Ethereum ETF instead of ETH directly?
Yes. Ethereum ETFs are available on the ASX, allowing Australians to gain ETH exposure through a standard brokerage account without managing private keys or wallets. However, buying ETH directly gives you access to staking rewards, DeFi protocols, and on-chain activity that an ETF cannot provide. Australians can also hold ETH inside a Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF), where capital gains are taxed at just 10% for assets held over 12 months — significantly lower than the standard marginal rate.
How do I buy Ethereum in Australia?
ETH is available on virtually every AUSTRAC-registered platform in Australia including CoinSpot, Swyftx, Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance, with direct AUD funding via PayID or bank transfer. UpTrade is AUSTRAC-registered and provides access to ETH as part of its full suite of 500+ digital assets.
Do I pay tax on Ethereum in Australia?
Yes. The ATO treats ETH as a CGT asset — every sale, trade, or exchange triggers a CGT event. Hold for more than 12 months and you're entitled to the 50% CGT discount. Staking adds another layer — ETH staking rewards are treated as ordinary income at their AUD value on the day received, taxed at your full marginal rate with no CGT discount on that income. When you later sell staked ETH, a second CGT event occurs on any gain since you received it. Keep detailed records of all transactions and staking activity, and consult a crypto-savvy accountant.
